So recently we purchased a Blackstone Griddle to see what all the hype was about. Well, I am happy to report we are head over heels in love with this thing! We can whip up the best burger that is even better than our local burger joint!

Today, it’s all about the homemade smash burgers though. They are simple to make, taste amazing, and are just as good or better than what you can get at a restaurant.

Ingredients

  • Ground Meat (we used beef)
  • Seasonings of your choice, I used kosher salt and black pepper, and Blackstone Griddle Burger Seasoning
  • Butter
  • American Cheese Slices
  • Toppings: Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, red onion, hot sauce, special sauce, bacon or anything else you like

Step by Step Instructions

1. Preheat the Blackstone Griddle to medium-high heat.

2. Put ground beef into 1/4 or 1/3 measuring cup to make balls of ground beef. (you can make the beef balls bigger or smaller if you want, but that is the sizes we like) Don’t press down on it. It needs to be loosely packed. Carefully, shape them into a ball with your hands. Do this lightly and be sure not to pack them.

3. Use a stick of butter and butter the griddle. (or use your favorite oil)

4. Take the burger balls and place them on the hot griddle. Let them sizzle for 3-4 minutes. Then use a burger press (or large metal spatula) and press down until you have a smashed burger.

NOTE: You can also use a piece of parchment paper or wax paper on top of the burger patties if you want so it doesn’t stick to the spatula. Or spray the spatula with some non-stick spray or grease with butter.

5. Season the burgers as you desire. Let them cook until the bottom side has turned brown and crispy, then flip over and cook the second side. This usually takes around 5 minutes. This will vary depending on how high your heat is.

6. After flipping, continue cooking for 3-5 minutes or until they reach your desired doneness. Top each burger patty with a slice of cheese and let it melt.

7. After you flip the burgers, butter the griddle and add your hamburger buns or brioche buns to the hot surface. (we used pretzel buns) Brown them until they become golden brown.

8. Put together your homemade smashburger and DEVOUR!

Recipe FAQs

Can I use different meat?

Sure! We love ground beef for the smash burgers, so that is what we always reach for. You could also use ground turkey or chicken too. Keep in mind, that whatever you use is going to taste differently than traditional ground beef.

What can I top the burger with?

You can add anything you want! Bacon, ham, fried eggs, hash browns, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, guacamole, the list goes on. Don’t be afraid to add all your favorite toppings.

What size of Blackstone Griddle do I need?

So, we have the 36″ because we love to entertain and make tons of food. If you are just feeding a couple of people you can easily get by with a smaller griddle. They also have Blackstone Grills that are easily transportable to take to the lake with you!

How much meat do I need?

When making this smash burger recipe, I sort of left that open for you. We used 1 1/2 pounds and made 6 1/4 pound hamburgers. However, you can easily adjust the amount based on how many you need.

Can I make a juicy burger indoors?

Yep! Simply use an indoor flat top griddle or large cast-iron skillet. You’ll follow the Blackstone smash burger recipe precisely, except you are making the thin burger indoors!

  • 1 - 2 pounds Ground Beef (depending on how many you are making)
  • Seasonings of your choice, I used salt and pepper only
  • Butter
  • Cheese Slices
  • Toppings: Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, or anything else you like
